What HVAC technicians do
HVAC technicians install, maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The trade divides into working lives that pay quite differently.
- Residential service โ four to seven calls a day: a system that will not cool, a failed capacitor or contactor, seasonal tune-ups, replacement quotes. Most customer contact, most variety, the usual entry point.
- Installation โ crews fitting new systems, often one to three days per job. Physical, weather-exposed, predictable.
- Light commercial โ restaurants, retail, small offices. A mix of service and small installs.
- Commercial and chiller work โ rooftop units, chillers, variable air volume systems. More technical, better paid.
- Refrigeration โ supermarket cases, walk-in coolers, cold storage. Typically the highest-paid specialization, and the one with the most emergency call-outs.
- Controls and building management โ integrating systems and automation. The strongest long-term path as buildings get smarter.
Expect to be on roofs, in attics and crawl spaces, and outdoors year-round. The work is busiest in the extremes of summer and winter, which is where the overtime is.
EPA 608 certification: the one requirement everywhere
Federal law requires EPA Section 608 certification before you can maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants. This applies in every state regardless of local licensing, and it is the credential that makes you employable.
There are four types:
- Type I โ small appliances.

Texas is the clearest example of the first model: anyone assisting a licensed contractor with air conditioning maintenance or repair must register as a technician with TDLR, from age 16, for a $20 annual fee. Georgia is the clearest example of the second: the state licenses conditioned air contractors in two classes by system size, and employees work under them without their own license.
North Carolina is worth singling out for students, because up to half of its 4,000-hour experience requirement can be met with academic or technical training โ which is exactly what a community college HVAC program provides.
Step by step
- Finish high school or a GED. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a postsecondary nondegree award as the typical entry credential for HVAC, so unlike most construction trades, formal training is the norm rather than the exception.
- Choose training. A certificate takes 6 to 12 months, a diploma 9 to 15, an associate degree 18 to 24. Employers care most that you can be useful on a truck, which the shorter programs achieve.
- Earn EPA 608. Universal certification if you can. Many programs include the exam.
- Get hired as a helper or junior technician. Ride with an experienced tech. This is where the diagnostic judgment that the classroom cannot teach gets built.
- Meet your state's requirement. Register as a technician if your state requires it, or accumulate the experience your state wants toward a contractor license.
- Specialize. Refrigeration, commercial chillers or controls, after two to three years of general work.
School or apprenticeship?

Starting as a helper
Some technicians skip formal training entirely, get hired as an installation helper and study for EPA 608 on their own. It works, and it is the cheapest route, but it is slower to reach service work โ where the pay is โ because employers want diagnostic training before they hand you a service truck.
